4 Common Ways House Fires Start

House fires can cause devastating damage to a home and the items inside the house. Fortunately, there are ways to lower the risk of a fire starting in your house, including being aware of some of the common causes of fires. Here are four common ways that house fires start.

1. Smoking

Smoking, particularly while sitting on the couch or while in bed, poses a risk of fire. People can fall asleep before fully putting the cigarette out, which is dangerous if the cigarette comes into contact with flammable materials. If you or someone in your house is a smoker, you can reduce this risk by only smoking outside or refraining from smoking in the bedroom. Especially if you are a smoker, ensure that the installation of fire code San Diego CA in your home is up to date.

2. Preparing Food

It is easy to get distracted while cooking, especially if you are the only one in the house, if you are attempting to multi-task, or if you have small children to watch. When putting food in the oven, it is a good idea to set a timer to remember when to take the food out and turn the oven off. Refrain from wearing loose-fitting clothing while cooking, as this can be dangerous if it comes into contact with an open flame.

3. Electrical Equipment

If electrical equipment has faulty wiring or if an outlet or power strip is overloaded, this can quickly cause a fire as a result of the overburdened wires. Make sure that outlets, wires, and electrical equipment in your house remain in good working order.

Candles pose a fire risk if left unattended or in a location where they can be easily knocked over. Keep candles away from children and pets to help reduce this risk.
